What Maths Anxiety Looks Like in Children: A Parent's Recognition Guide

Maths anxiety is not an excuse, a phase, or a sign of low intelligence. It is a real and measurable stress response that affects a significant number of primary-school children -- and it tends to look very different from what parents expect.

Most children with maths anxiety do not say "I have maths anxiety." They show it through their behaviour, their body, and their thinking. Recognising the pattern is the first step to responding in a way that actually helps.


What maths anxiety is

Maths anxiety is a state of tension and apprehension specifically triggered by situations involving maths -- from opening a workbook, to a timed test, to being called on in class.

It is not a problem with intelligence. Research using neuroimaging has shown that for people who experience maths anxiety, simply anticipating a maths task can activate brain regions associated with threat processing and, in some studies, discomfort or pain. The brain is responding as if something threatening is about to happen. This response can suppress working memory -- the cognitive resource most needed for calculation -- which is why an anxious child may know the material at home and seem to forget it completely at the board.

Estimates vary, but research suggests that a meaningful proportion of primary-school children experience maths anxiety at a level that affects their performance and their willingness to engage with the subject.


How it shows up

Maths anxiety is not one thing. It shows up differently in different children, and the same child may show different signs at different times. The following patterns are worth knowing.

In behaviour: Avoiding starting maths homework while completing other subjects readily. Finding reasons to delay ("I need a drink," "I forgot my pencil"). Saying "I can't do it" before reading the problem. Giving up quickly on anything unfamiliar.

In the body: Stomach aches or headaches before school on days with maths tests or assessments. Tension or tears at the start of maths sessions. Visible physical discomfort that does not appear with other subjects.

In thinking and self-talk: "I'm just not good at maths." "Everyone else understands except me." "I'm going to fail." These statements are not attention-seeking -- they are a child accurately reporting how their anxious mind is interpreting the situation.

In school performance: Doing well on homework but blanking during tests. Knowing a method one day and appearing to forget it the next under pressure. Performing differently in low-stakes versus high-stakes conditions.


What tends to make it worse

Several common patterns can intensify maths anxiety without anyone intending them to:

Timed tests and visible scoring. Time pressure activates the same stress response that already makes maths feel threatening. Adding a timer to a maths session for an anxious child often reduces, not improves, performance.

Public mistakes. Being corrected in front of classmates teaches some children to fear being seen getting something wrong, more than it teaches them the correct method.

Comparison. "Your sister finds this easy" or "everyone else in your class managed it" adds social threat to an already threatening situation.

Parental anxiety about maths. Research suggests that parents who express their own anxiety about maths can inadvertently pass some of that anxiety to their children -- not through genetics, but through modelling and language.


What helps

Maths anxiety responds well to the right kind of consistency. The key is reducing the emotional stakes of maths practice, not pushing harder.

Predictable, low-pressure practice. Short sessions at the same time each day, without grades, without comparison, and without time pressure, can help maths feel less threatening over time. The goal is repeated exposure without the stress response -- so that the brain gradually begins to experience maths as safe rather than threatening.

Starting below the frustration level. Success at slightly easier material builds the confidence to attempt harder material. Starting above a child's current comfort level and drilling through failure rarely produces learning -- it produces avoidance.

Reframing mistakes. "We haven't got this one yet -- let's come back to it" is both more accurate and more emotionally useful than treating each error as evidence of inability.

Reducing time pressure. Remove the timer from practice sessions at home. Speed is a product of fluency, which develops over time through repetition, not through urgency.

Modelling a healthy relationship with difficulty. Saying "I found this hard too, I had to try several times" is more useful than either pretending maths is easy or expressing frustration that the child finds it hard.


What you can do this week

Start one short maths session of ten to fifteen minutes at a consistent time. Choose material the child can handle successfully most of the time. Do not score it, do not time it, and do not compare it to what anyone else is doing. When the child gets something wrong, simply note it as something to return to. End the session before frustration peaks.

That is the whole thing for this week. The aim is not to teach new material. It is to make maths feel like something that can happen without a fight.


When to seek help

If your child regularly shows somatic symptoms (frequent stomach aches or headaches linked to maths), if they are refusing maths completely, if the distress is intense and persistent over several weeks, or if they are showing signs of anxiety extending beyond maths, it is worth speaking to a school psychologist, educational psychologist, or qualified specialist.

Maths anxiety that is identified and addressed early responds well to appropriate support. If school demands are increasing and the anxiety is not improving, waiting is rarely the better option.
