"I don't want to do maths!" is one of the most common things parents of primary-school children hear. Before reaching for pressure or reward charts, it helps to understand what is actually happening -- because the cause shapes the solution.
Why children resist maths
Math refusal is rarely about laziness. In most cases, it is a signal that something in the child's relationship with the subject has become difficult or threatening.
Several common causes tend to overlap:
Accumulated frustration. A concept that was never fully understood in Grade 1 becomes a shaky foundation in Grade 2. Each year, the gaps become harder to paper over, and the child begins to associate maths with repeated failure.
Math anxiety. Research on maths anxiety shows that for some children, anticipating a maths task can activate brain regions associated with threat processing and discomfort. This is not a character flaw. It is a measurable stress response that can interfere with thinking.
Fixed beliefs about ability. If a child has concluded -- from grades, from comments at home, from watching others -- that they are simply not a "maths person," their brain allocates fewer resources to attempting maths problems. Why try hard at something you believe you cannot do?
Pressure from adults. Urgency, frustration, and comparison in a parent's voice can make the emotional stakes of maths feel even higher. The subject becomes associated with tension rather than curiosity.
What pressure alone cannot do
The instinct to push harder -- more time at the desk, stricter consequences, longer sessions -- is understandable. But research on learning and stress consistently suggests that high-pressure environments can worsen avoidance in children who are already anxious or frustrated.
Longer sessions rarely help when a child is dysregulated. Forcing a child to sit with maths for forty minutes when they are already resistant does not build skill. It builds dread.
The goal is not to break the child's will. It is to gradually make maths feel safer -- less threatening, less tied to judgment, less all-or-nothing.
What tends to help: a practical routine
There is no single formula that works for every child. But several principles have consistent support in learning research.
Start below the frustration level. Find the level where the child can succeed most of the time. This is not easy work -- it is foundation work. Success builds willingness.
Keep sessions short and predictable. Research on spaced practice suggests that short, regular sessions tend to produce better retention than long, infrequent ones. Fifteen minutes at the same time each day is more useful than two hours on Sunday evening. Predictability also reduces anticipatory anxiety.
Remove public scoring and comparison. Doing maths with a parent watching for mistakes, or being compared to a sibling or classmate, adds pressure that interferes with thinking. The practice environment should feel private and safe.
Praise strategy and effort, not ability. "You tried a different way when the first one didn't work" is more useful than "you're so clever." Effort-focused feedback supports persistence; ability-focused praise can undermine confidence when the child eventually encounters difficulty.
Stop before the melt-down. Ending a session on a small success -- even a modest one -- leaves the child with a slightly more positive association than ending on a failure or a tantrum. Over time, this matters.
The language you use
What parents say about maths is absorbed more than they realise. "I was never good at maths either" quietly signals that it is normal -- even acceptable -- not to persist. "Some people just have a maths brain and some don't" closes the door before the child has had a chance to try.
What tends to work better: "I found this difficult too. I had to practise a lot." Or simply: "Let's see what this problem is asking together."
Curiosity is less threatening than competence as a goal. "I wonder how we'd work this out" creates a different emotional context than "You need to know this."
