Why I Built Goldy: So Math Practice No Longer Feels Like Punishment

Goldy·1 May 2026·👁 48

I taught math for years, to students aged 11 to 18. And over time, I reached a conclusion I hadn't expected when I started: the problem was rarely that a child couldn't understand math. More often, the problem was that they didn't want to practice.

Not because they were lazy or indifferent. But because practicing math had become synonymous with worksheets, homework time, and an adult's voice asking them to focus. The child had learned to associate practice with something unpleasant. As they got older, the resistance grew.

I watched this year after year and kept asking myself: is there another way?

Goldy is my answer to that question.

It's a free math practice platform for children aged 5 to 12, available entirely in the browser, with no download required and no account needed to start. There are over 100 short interactive games, structured lessons, and practice exercises, all aligned with the Romanian national curriculum, from the preparatory year of primary school through grades 4 to 6.

But more important than any feature list is what the child feels: that they're playing, not studying.

What makes Goldy different

Goldy starts from a simple idea: essential math practice should be free. The games, lessons, and practice sheets are all accessible without a subscription, without a trial period, and without a paywall. No child should be blocked by money. If optional features ever appear in the future, they'll stay optional. The core math practice remains free.

It's bilingual from the start. Every game and every lesson exists in Romanian and English. The Romanian curriculum alignment is real, not a translated British or American syllabus.

It respects the child and the family. No ads. No push notifications. There's a break reminder system, accessibility modes for children with dyslexia, color blindness, or motion sensitivity, and it works well on phones, tablets, and laptops. Email addresses are encrypted. IP addresses are not stored.

It was built by an educator, not a marketing team. The games aren't chosen to maximize time on the platform. They're chosen because they help children build real number fluency, step by step.

What you'll find on Goldy

Short 3- to 5-minute games covering addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, geometry, mental math, logic, and memory. Structured lessons with worked examples and immediate feedback. A parent dashboard where you can follow your child's progress, streaks, and earned badges.

I won't give you an exhaustive list. Open the platform and let your child explore. That's the best way to see what fits.

A word about the future

Goldy launched on May 1, 2026. There are no ads and I'm not planning to add them. If at some point the platform needs to support itself financially, it will be through optional features. The core practice stays free.

I'm watching what works, improving what doesn't, and adding what parents and children ask for.

Try it today

The best argument isn't a long article — it's a few minutes of trying: open goldy.ro, let your child pick a game, and give them a little time to play without interrupting.

If your child has never experienced math this way before, that's the sign it's worth continuing.
