ROUNDING TO FRIENDLY NUMBERS

A friendly number is one that is easy to work with - usually a multiple of 10. To add using friendly numbers, round one number up to the nearest ten, add, then subtract the extra you added.

38 + 25
1Round 38 up to 40 (add 2)
240 + 25 = 65
3Subtract the 2 you added: 65 − 2 = 63
= 63

LEADER TIP

Encourage children to ask 'What is the nearest ten?' before adding. This builds flexible thinking about numbers.
