DECIMALS AND FRACTIONS

A decimal is another way to write a fraction with a denominator of 10, 100, or 1000. The decimal point separates the whole number from the fractional part. For example, 0.5 means 5 tenths, which is the same as 1/2.

0.5 = 1/2
10.5 means 5 tenths
2That is the same as one half
0.25 = 1/4
10.25 means 25 hundredths
2That is the same as one quarter

Use money as a real-world anchor. Students intuitively understand that $1.50 means one dollar and fifty cents.
