COMPATIBLE NUMBERS

To estimate a division, find a nearby number that divides evenly - a compatible number. For 83 ÷ 9, think: 81 ÷ 9 = 9. The answer is about 9.

= 9

LEADER TIP

Teach 'compatible numbers': for 153 ÷ 7, think 'What multiple of 7 is close to 153?' (147 = 7 x 21).
