WHAT ARE SQUARE NUMBERS?

A square number is what you get when you multiply a number by itself: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100. They are called 'square' because you can arrange that many dots into a perfect square shape.

1x1=1, 2x2=4, 3x3=9, 4x4=16
1These form perfect squares!
21, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100

LEADER TIP

Let students build physical squares from tiles. Seeing that 5x5=25 tiles arranged in a square cements understanding.
