COUNTING ON

Start from the bigger number and count forward. The foundation of all addition.

STRATEGY: START BIG, COUNT FORWARD

Counting On is the first addition strategy every learner should master. Instead of counting both groups from 1, you start at the bigger number and count forward exactly as many numbers as the smaller addend shows. This saves time and builds number sense.

1Start at 5
2Count the next 3 numbers: 6, 7, 8
= 8
8 + 2
1Start at 8
2Count the next 2 numbers: 9, 10
= 10

LEADER TIP

Use physical objects or fingers first, then transition to mental counting. Always start from the larger number to be efficient.
