UNDERSTANDING PLACE VALUE

In larger numbers, each digit has a place value: ones, tens, hundreds. When adding multi-digit numbers, we can add each place separately. This is called partial sums or expanded form addition.

34 + 25
1Tens: 30 + 20 = 50
2Ones: 4 + 5 = 9
350 + 9 = 59
= 59

LEADER TIP

Use base-ten blocks to make regrouping concrete before moving to the written algorithm.
