ADD THE NUMERATORS

When the denominators match, the pieces are the same size, so you simply count them. 1/5 + 2/5 = 3/5. The denominator never changes, because the size of each piece has not changed.

1/5 + 2/5

2Add numerators: 1 + 2 = 3

3Keep denominator: 3/5
