SYMMETRY

Find lines of symmetry in shapes and recognise symmetrical patterns in nature.

Section 1 / 2
LINES OF SYMMETRY

A line of symmetry divides a shape into two identical halves that are mirror images of each other. If you fold along the line, both sides match perfectly. A square has 4 lines of symmetry, a rectangle has 2, and a circle has infinitely many!

Square - how many lines of symmetry?
1Fold vertically ✓
2Fold horizontally ✓
3Fold diagonally ✓ (×2)
44 lines of symmetry
= 4

LEADER TIP

Folding paper is the most powerful way to teach symmetry. Have students fold and cut to make symmetrical shapes.
