2D SHAPES

Two-dimensional (2D) shapes are flat and have length and width. Key properties to learn: number of sides, number of vertices (corners), and types of angles. Common shapes include triangles (3 sides), quadrilaterals (4 sides), pentagons (5 sides), and hexagons (6 sides).

Triangle
13 sides
23 corners (vertices)
3All angles add up to 180°
Rectangle
14 sides
24 right angles (90°)
3Opposite sides are equal

LEADER TIP

Use geoboards and pattern blocks for hands-on exploration. Let students sort shapes by their own criteria first.
