WHAT IS BRIDGING?

Bridging means hitting the nearest ten as a checkpoint on the way to your answer. For 8 + 7: first jump to 10 (add 2), then add the remaining 5 = 15. The ten in the middle is your bridge.

8 + 7
18 + 2 = 10 (bridge to ten)
27 − 2 = 5 left over
310 + 5 = 15
= 15

LEADER TIP

Use a hundred chart to show the 'bridge' visually. Colour the tens in a different colour so students see the landmarks.
