ESTIMATION & SMART GUESSING

Train your number sense to make smart guesses and spot wrong answers.

CS.N.3.3(III)
Section 1 / 3
THE ESTIMATION MINDSET

Estimation is not about getting the exact answer - it is about knowing roughly what to expect. Before calculating, close your eyes and guess: is the answer closer to 10, 100, or 1000? This builds strong number sense.

How many sweets in a jar?
1Count a small section (say 10 in one layer)
2Count the layers (about 5)
3Estimate: 10 x 5 = about 50 sweets
= 50

LEADER TIP

Run regular 'estimation stations' with jars of items. Children who estimate well develop stronger number sense overall.
