BREAK THE NUMBER APART

A hard multiplication becomes two easy ones if you split a number into tens and ones. For 7 x 13, split 13 into 10 and 3. Now you have two friendly products instead of one awkward one.

1Split 14 into 10 + 4

210 × 6 = 60

34 × 6 = 24

460 + 24 = 84

= 84

LEADER TIP

Start with friendly splits like 12×6 = 10×6 + 2×6 before moving to harder numbers.
