BREAK APART STRATEGY

Hard multiplications become easy when you break one number into parts. For 7x8: think 7x(5+3) = 7x5 + 7x3 = 35+21 = 56. You already know 7x5 and 7x3 - they're easier!

7 x 8
1Break 8 into 5 + 3
27 x 5 = 35
37 x 3 = 21
435 + 21 = 56
= 56

LEADER TIP

Use area model drawings on grid paper. Breaking 7x8 into 7x5 + 7x3 makes hard facts manageable.
