REPEATED ADDITION

Understand multiplication as adding equal groups together.

L2L3
CS.N.2.6(II)
Section 1 / 3
MULTIPLICATION AS GROUPS

Multiplication is a shortcut for adding equal groups. Instead of adding 4+4+4 (three groups of 4), we write 3x4=12. The first number tells how many groups, the second tells how many in each group.

3 x 4
13 groups of 4
24 + 4 + 4 = 12
= 12
5 x 2
15 groups of 2
22 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10
= 10

LEADER TIP

Start with physical groups of objects. 3 bags of 4 apples - let them count to discover the pattern.
