Section 1 / 2
COMPARING NEGATIVE NUMBERS

When comparing negatives, remember: closer to zero = greater. So −3 > −7 because −3 is closer to zero. On the number line, the number further right is always the greater one. Use < and > symbols to show comparisons.

Which is greater: −3 or −7?
1On the number line, −3 is to the RIGHT of −7
2Further right = greater
3−3 > −7
= -3

LEADER TIP

Further left means smaller. Use a number line on the floor and have students walk to compare positions.
