NEGATIVES ON NUMBER LINES

Place and order negative numbers on a number line.

L4L5
Section 1 / 2
ORDERING NEGATIVE NUMBERS

To order negative numbers, imagine the number line. Numbers further right are always bigger. So: −5 < −3 < −1 < 0 < 2 < 4. A helpful trick: for negative numbers, the one with the smaller digit is actually bigger (−2 > −7).

Order: −3, 1, −5, 4, 0
1Smallest is furthest left: −5
2Then −3, then 0, then 1, then 4
3Order: −5, −3, 0, 1, 4
= -5, -3, 0, 1, 4

LEADER TIP

Extend the number line left past zero. Use a thermometer as a vertical number line - it makes negatives visual.
