WHAT IS A FUNCTION MACHINE?

A function machine takes a number in (input), applies a rule, and produces a number out (output). For example, Rule: +3 means every number that goes in gets 3 added. Input 5 > Output 8. Input 10 > Output 13.

Rule: +3. Input: 5 > Output: ?
1Apply the rule: 5 + 3 = 8
2Output = 8
= 8
Rule: ×2. Input: 7 > Output: ?
1Apply the rule: 7 × 2 = 14
= 14
