THE RULE: MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE FIRST

When an expression has both addition/subtraction and multiplication/division, always do × and ÷ FIRST. Then do + and −. Think of it like this: multiplication and division are 'stronger' operations. 2 + 3 × 4 = 2 + 12 = 14 (NOT 5 × 4 = 20). The mnemonic BODMAS helps: Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

2 + 3 × 4 = ?
1First: 3 × 4 = 12 (multiplication before addition)
2Then: 2 + 12 = 14
= 14
10 − 2 × 3 = ?
1First: 2 × 3 = 6
2Then: 10 − 6 = 4
= 4
