Section 1 / 2
THE EQUALS SIGN MEANS BALANCE

An equation is like a balance scale - both sides must have the same value. 3 + 4 = 7 means the left side (7) equals the right side (7). When you see _ + 2 = 3 + 4, find each side's value and make them match.

3 + 4 = _ + 2
1Left side: 3 + 4 = 7
2Right side must also = 7
3_ + 2 = 7, so _ = 5
= 5
10 − 3 = 2 + _
1Left side: 10 − 3 = 7
22 + _ = 7, so _ = 5
= 5

LEADER TIP

Physical balance scales with weights make the concept tangible. Both sides must weigh the same.
