ROMAN NUMERALS ON CLOCKS

Traditional clocks use Roman numerals for the hours. Interestingly, many clocks write 4 as IIII instead of IV for visual balance! You will see I through XII around the clock face. It is a fun way to practice reading Roman numerals every day.

Clock shows IV - what time?
1IV = 4
2The hour hand points to 4 o'clock
= 4

LEADER TIP

Roman numerals appear on clocks, in book chapters, on buildings, and in movie sequels. Create a school scavenger hunt!
