L4L5
Section 1 / 2
HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS: D AND M

D = 500 and M = 1000 let us write large numbers. MD = 1500, MM = 2000, MMM = 3000. The largest number you can write in standard Roman numerals is MMMCMXCIX = 3999. Historically, a bar over a numeral meant ×1000.

D = 500, M = 1000
1D = 500
2M = 1000
3MD = 1500
4MM = 2000
= 0
MCMXCIX = ?
1M = 1000
2CM = 900
3XC = 90
4IX = 9
51000 + 900 + 90 + 9 = 1999
= 1999
