Section 1 / 2
THE SEVEN ROMAN SYMBOLS

Roman numerals use seven letters to represent numbers: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. Unlike our number system, there is no zero. Numbers are built by combining these symbols, usually from largest to smallest, left to right.

Basic symbols: I, V, X, L, C
1I = 1
2V = 5
3X = 10
4L = 50
5C = 100
= 0
Read: VII
1V = 5
2II = 2
35 + 2 = 7
= 7

LEADER TIP

Start with I, V, and X. Build familiarity through clock faces - most students have seen Roman numerals without realising.
