ROMAN TO ARABIC (OUR NUMBERS)

To convert Roman numerals to regular numbers: read left to right. If a smaller value comes before a larger one, subtract it; otherwise add it. XLII: X before L means 50−10=40, then add II=2. Total: 42.

1XL = 40 (50 − 10)
2II = 2
340 + 2 = 42
= 42

1L = 50
2X = 10
3VI = 6
450 + 10 + 6 = 66
= 66
