Section 1 / 2
READING PICTOGRAMS

A pictogram uses pictures or symbols to represent data. Each symbol stands for a certain number - this is called the key. For example, if each 🍎 = 2 apples, then three apples = 🍎🍎½. Always check the key before reading any pictogram!

Each 🍎 = 2 apples. Row has 🍎🍎🍎 = ?
1Each symbol represents 2
23 symbols × 2 = 6 apples
= 6
Half symbol = half the value: 🍎🍎½ = ?
12 full symbols = 4
2Half symbol = 1
34 + 1 = 5
= 5

LEADER TIP

Each picture must represent the same amount. Start with 1:1, then move to symbols worth 2, 5, or 10.
