MULTIPLYING DECIMALS

To multiply a decimal by a whole number, ignore the decimal point, multiply as whole numbers, then put the decimal point back. Count how many decimal places were in the original number. That is how many places the answer needs.

0.3 × 4
13 × 4 = 12
2One decimal place > 1.2
= 1.2

LEADER TIP

Relate to whole numbers first: 0.3 × 4 is the same as 3 × 4 ÷ 10. Build from what students already know.
