THE GRID (BOX) METHOD

Split each number into tens and ones, draw a grid, and multiply each pair. For 23 x 4: make boxes for 20 x 4 = 80 and 3 x 4 = 12. Add: 80 + 12 = 92.

23 x 4
1Break apart: 20 x 4 = 80
23 x 4 = 12
380 + 12 = 92
= 92

LEADER TIP

The grid (box) method is an excellent bridge between understanding and the standard algorithm. Don't skip it!
