WHAT IS PERIMETER?

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape. To find it, add up the lengths of all the sides. For a rectangle, there is a shortcut: Perimeter = 2 × (length + width), because opposite sides are equal.

Rectangle: 5 cm by 3 cm
1P = 2 × (length + width)
2P = 2 × (5 + 3)
3P = 2 × 8 = 16 cm
= 16

LEADER TIP

Walk the perimeter of the classroom! Relate perimeter to fencing a garden or framing a picture.
