Section 1 / 2
PERCENTAGE DISCOUNTS

A discount is a percentage taken off the original price. To find the sale price: calculate the percentage of the price, then subtract it. A £40 toy with 25% off: 25% of £40 = £10, so the sale price is £40 − £10 = £30.

Toy costs £40, 25% off
125% of £40 = £10
2Sale price: £40 − £10 = £30
= 30

LEADER TIP

Use shopping catalogues and sale adverts. Calculate the actual saving - it makes percentages immediately relevant.
