Section 1 / 2
FINDING THE MISSING NUMBER

A missing number problem has a gap you need to fill: _ + 5 = 12. To solve it, use the inverse (opposite) operation. Since adding 5 gives 12, subtract 5 from 12: 12 โˆ’ 5 = 7. The missing number is 7!

_ + 5 = 12
1What plus 5 equals 12?
212 โˆ’ 5 = 7
3So _ = 7
= 7
_ ร— 3 = 15
1What times 3 equals 15?
215 รท 3 = 5
3So _ = 5
= 5

LEADER TIP
