BAR CHARTS AND HOW TO READ THEM

A bar chart uses rectangular bars to show amounts. The taller the bar, the bigger the number. Always read the scale on the y-axis (the side going up) carefully. Compare bars by looking at their heights.

Read the bar chart: Ice cream flavours
1Find the tallest bar > most popular flavour
2Read the y-axis to find how many
3Chocolate = 8, Vanilla = 5, Strawberry = 3
= 8
How many more chose Chocolate than Strawberry?
1Chocolate = 8, Strawberry = 3
28 − 3 = 5 more
= 5

LEADER TIP

Start with topics students care about - favourite sports, pets, snacks. When data is personal, reading graphs becomes exciting.
