Start from the larger number and count backwards to subtract.

STRATEGY: START BIG, COUNT BACKWARD

Counting Back is like Counting On but in reverse. Start at the bigger number and count backward as many times as the smaller number. The number you land on is the difference.

2Count back: 7, 6, 5

= 5

10 - 4

1Start at 10

2Count back: 9, 8, 7, 6

= 6

LEADER TIP

Pair with counting on. Some students prefer counting up from the smaller number instead of counting back.
