JUMPING BACK IN CHUNKS

For larger subtractions, don't count back one by one. Instead, make strategic jumps: subtract tens first, then ones. For 43-18: jump back 10 from 43 to get 33, then jump back 8 to get 25.

43 - 18
1Start at 43
2Jump back 10: 33
3Jump back 8: 25
= 25

LEADER TIP

Empty number lines let students show their own thinking. Encourage jumps of 10 first, then adjust.
