TURN SUBTRACTION INTO ADDITION

Instead of subtracting, ask: what do I add to the smaller number to reach the bigger one? For 13-5, think: 5 + ? = 13. If you know your addition facts, subtraction becomes much easier!

13 - 5 = ?
1Think: 5 + ? = 13
25 + 8 = 13
3So 13 - 5 = 8
= 8

LEADER TIP

Fact families help students see the connection. Write all four facts together: 5+7=12, 7+5=12, 12-5=7, 12-7=5.
