WHEN YOU CAN'T SUBTRACT THE ONES

In column subtraction, sometimes the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit. When this happens, you need to regroup (borrow): take 1 ten from the tens column and add 10 ones to the ones column.

42 - 17
12 < 7, need to regroup
2Borrow from tens: 3 tens + 12 ones
312 - 7 = 5
43 - 1 = 2
5Answer: 25
= 25

LEADER TIP

Use place-value mats with actual base-ten blocks. Students must physically exchange 1 ten for 10 ones.
