IDENTIFYING SUBTRACTION SITUATIONS

Subtraction word problems involve taking away, finding the difference, or comparing. Key words: left, remaining, fewer, difference, how many more, how much less. Read carefully - 'how many more' is a comparison, not adding!

Tom had 24 stickers. He gave 9 to his friend. How many are left?
1Key words: gave, left
2This is take-away subtraction
324 - 9 = 15
= 15

LEADER TIP

Help students identify: Is this take-away, comparison, or missing part? Each type requires different thinking.
