Tips for Learning Addition Facts
Master the doubles
2+2, 3+3, 4+4… Doubles are easy to visualise (think of pairs of shoes, hands, etc.) and serve as anchors for nearby facts.
Make 10
Learn all pairs that add up to 10 (1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5). This is the most powerful addition strategy and helps with mental math for life.
Doubles +1 / −1
If you know 6+6=12, then 6+7 is just one more: 13. This 'near doubles' trick covers many facts.
Counting on
For small additions, start from the larger number and count up. For 3+8, start at 8 and count: 9, 10, 11.
The turn-around trick
3+7 = 7+3. Addition is commutative - you only need to learn half the table!
Use a number line
Drawing a number line and hopping forward helps visualise addition. It builds number sense naturally.
