Tips for Learning Subtraction Facts

Think addition in reverse

Every subtraction fact has an addition partner. If 7 + 5 = 12, then 12 − 5 = 7. Learning your addition table helps with subtraction too!

Count back from the bigger number

For small differences, start at the larger number and count backwards. For 11 − 3: 10, 9, 8 - the answer is 8.

Count up to find the gap

Instead of taking away, count up from the smaller number. For 13 − 8, count: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 - that's 5 steps.

Use doubles to subtract

If you know 6 + 6 = 12, then 12 − 6 = 6 instantly. Doubles make many subtraction facts automatic.

Zero gives the same number

Any number minus 0 is itself (8 − 0 = 8). And any number minus itself is always 0!

Subtract by making 10's

Break the problem into steps through 10. For 15 − 8: first 15 − 5 = 10, then 10 − 3 = 7.
