Tips for Learning Division Facts

Division is reverse multiplication

If you know 6 × 4 = 24, then 24 ÷ 4 = 6 and 24 ÷ 6 = 4. Your multiplication table is a division table too!

Dividing by 1

Any number divided by 1 stays the same. 9 ÷ 1 = 9. This is the easiest column to remember!

Dividing by yourself

Any number divided by itself is always 1. 7 ÷ 7 = 1. Look at the diagonal!

Dividing by 2 = halving

Dividing by 2 is the same as finding half. If you can halve numbers, you've mastered the ÷2 column.

Look for patterns

The ÷3 results cycle: 1, 2, 3, 4… The ÷5 column ends in clean numbers. Finding patterns makes facts easier to remember.

Use sharing to visualise

Think of division as sharing equally. 12 ÷ 3 = "share 12 sweets among 3 friends" = 4 each.
