Tips for Learning the Times Tables Facts

Start with the easy ones

The 1×, 2×, 5×, and 10× tables are the easiest to learn first. They follow simple patterns.

Look for patterns

The 9× table digits always add up to 9 (e.g. 9×3=27, 2+7=9). The 5× table always ends in 0 or 5.

Use the commutative property

3×7 = 7×3. Once you know 3×7, you already know 7×3 - that cuts your work almost in half!

Practice daily

Short daily practice (5–10 minutes) is more effective than long weekly sessions for building fluency.

Skip counting

Count by 3s (3, 6, 9, 12…), by 4s (4, 8, 12, 16…) etc. This builds multiplication intuition.

Break hard facts down

7×8 is tricky? Think 7×8 = 7×(5+3) = 35+21 = 56. The distributive property is your friend.
